University Suspends Staffer for Marriage Stance

University Suspends Staffer for Marriage Stance

The “chief diversity officer” of Gallaudet University, Dr. Angela McCaskill, was placed on paid leave after it was discovered that she signed a petition demanding Maryland citizens be allowed to vote on a marriage bill.

Currently Maryland citizens are blocked from voting on the issue of traditional marriage because the state legislature already decided to permit homosexual marriages within the state. Every state that has given its citizens the right to vote on the issue has voted in favor of true, traditional marriage. Perhaps this is why Maryland legislatures were so scared to give the matter over to the most sacred democratic process.

But now Dr. Angela McCaskill is facing punishment and the possibility of loosing her job simply for signing a bill that asks for the issue to be put up for a vote so Maryland citizens can decide whether to accept or reject the redefinition of marriage. This is outrageous!

TAKE ACTION:

Join us in demanding that the University stop the suspension of Dr. McCaskill and apologize for their bigoted behavior. Write to Gallaudet University President, Dr. T. Alan Hurwitz at:

Sample language available for your use:

Dear Gallaudet University President T. Alan Hurwitz:

Your suspension of Gallaudet's chief diversity officer Angela McCaskill for her participation in a fully legitimate democratic process is reprehensible.

A person should no more be punished for signing a petition than they should be for voting. This is a basic citizen's right to participation in our democratic process. Gallaudet University claims to believe in diversity but clearly their definition of diversity doesn't allow for dissent when it comes to marriage.

Your actions have tarnished any reflection of free expression that the school you serve might have. If employees can be punished for signing a petition, what will be done to them if they vote the wrong way?

For the sake of democracy, I urge you to fully reinstate Dr. McCaskill. She should be judged on the merits of her two decades of service to the University--not punished for exercising her right to participate in the democratic process.

Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention. American citizens need to know that their Constitutional rights are being devoured by government and by those in authoritative positions.

    • Beth Dauner says:

I agree. She should not be suspended just for exercising her constitutional right to petition, no matter what the viewpoints. What’s wrong with signing a petition, so that the “people” can vote on it? It is “we the people”. Just because she holds the position of chief diversity does not mean that she can’t take part in a democratic process and support a petition to uphold marriage.

I wholly agree that this is an outrageous violation of free speech. Using your ‘language guide’ (thank you), my e-mail to University President Hurwitz is on its way.
